Songdo and Mansu Wastewater Treatment Plants in Incheon

Challenge

In December 2001, Veolia Water was chosen by the municipality of Incheon to build and operate two wastewater treatement plants in Songdo and Mansu areas. Veolia Water Korea formed a 80-20 partnership with Samsung Engineering.

This project was the first BTO contract (Build, Transfer, Operate) to be signed by a municipality in the water sector.

The contract involved the design, financing, construction and operation for 20 years for the two plants.

For Songdo, the challenge was to implement and operate a flexible compact technology that was able to handle the growing volume of wastewater on a small footprint. A new technologically advanced solution (BiostyrTM) was needed to correspond to the image and goals of becoming the new economic development area.

For Mansu, the objective was to increase the capacity and efficiency of the wastewater treatment in response to population growth and increasing stringent environmental standards.
